Budi Rahardjo’s Thoughts
Look around. You will see a new change in how people listen to music. Gone are the days when they carry CDs. Cassettes? You are kidding, aren’t you? My kids don’t have cassettes. People are listening to MP3. In offices, each person has his or her own computer with a pair of speakers or headphones. Students now carry their own USB flash disks with built in MP3 players. Their cellphones already have MP3 capability too.
We can see that digital music, mostly in form of MP3, is on the rise. Even in Indonesia. You can deny it (mostly music labels), or you can accept it (like iTunes).
Old music lovers feel that digital music has a lower quality compared to analog. That is probably true with vinyl records, but who would carry records? Yes, perhaps there is a limit to what a digital technology can do right now, but I have no doubt that it will be better and better.
At least, digital technology makes it convenience for people to listen to music. In terms of business, this creates a bigger pie, much bigger! Most music labels do not understand this. They think that people will exchange songs for free. That is true. I even suspect that that is going to be the majority, but we are talking about a much bigger pie here. If you go to a more restricted format, such as the ones with Digital Rights Management (DRM), you’ll get a smaller pie, much smaller.
Let me give you an example. Say, you have a song with DRM. Probably there’s only 10,000 people who bought that song. Now you have the same song in MP3 format. Probably there’s one million people exchange the song for free, but there’s probably 100,000 people who paid for that song. Which one would you choose? I’ll pick the 100,000 for obvious reason.
Welcome to our world, digital music.

This issue will never ends right?
I have read this topic in your other blog, get inspired by it then I post my own version in bahasa Indonesia in my blog.
My big question is how to persued major Label to deploy their product online. We must show them an evidence that we really play in a bigger pie.
I have a naughty thought, what if I deploy a portal music and sell their product without their permission. I will keep the money I earn from the selling activity until they protest.
When it happen I will show to them how much money I earn from the online selling and give their share.
Well.. its a big risk right? If the money is good then they will convinced that there is a bigger pie we talking about. But if the money is bad then they will get angry and sue me, I will going to jail for sure.
Oh boy, I just want to see a better live. But we don’t know until we try. How do you say about that?

@wibisono, you cannot sell music without the permission of the right owners. They will sue you, for sure. Not just labels, but the artists will also sue you. We just have to be patient.
