Budi Rahardjo’s Thoughts

No Respect for Digital

I had an on-line discussion about digital technology and how it relates to music, photography, and the like - basically arts. Based on the discussion, I’ve got an impression that digital technology still does not get the respect it deserves.

Many people still think that photos taken by digital cameras are not “as good” as conventional, analog camera. Thus, they are not really photography. An image drawn using Photoshop is not “as good” as painting directly on canvas. A friend of mine asked, “would you spend $1000 for a picture done with Photoshop?” Ouch. There are people who would paid hundreds of thousands dollars for “real” pictures. The same thing for music.

In short, digital arts are still “not art” at all. What do you think?

I’ve got no r e s p e c t!.

I really want to know what they say about special effect in Jurassic Park movie which won academy award prize.

The essence of art is the creativity it self, not the media. I think they were people just doesn’t have appreciation of art.

I have collected many digital surialism painting done with photoshop and the quality is amazing since the younger generation of surialism artist are more comfort playing with photoshop rather than real canvas.

it just the matter of Era. Maybe currently, the arts value is still measured with how hard it is done without any of additional-unoriginal tools. So, doing with photoshop, for some people, some reasons, is easier than drawing in canvas with “real” brush. Someday it will change.I guess. But still, there is always some people still love what it used to be.

I think reasons people don’t respect digital art are:
    1. Unreal, they think digital are unreal. Photoshopped picture, vector arts are unreal. But so does Picasso.
    2. Easy to duplicate. Just copy and paste. Done! There is just not much effort to have a digital art. Just buy the copy (or do some piracy thing hehehe). In analog art (is analog the opposite of digital? Hehehe…) the copy is not as good as the original. They lack of “orginal touch”. but in digital arts those thing won’t happen

maybe those are advantages of digital arts.

Yes guys, many people think that digital technology is easier to master. I think digital technology is easier to use, but not necessarily easier to master. I have to emphasize the word “master.” Some people think to use and to master is the same. They’re not.

I’ll give you and example. How many of you think that you are good in wordprocessing (say, using Microsoft Word or OpenOffice)? Now, let me ask you, how many of you use paragraph style in your writing? What is “paragraph style”? There you go! You know nothing of wordprocessing. There are other questions like character style, page layout, macros, and many things.

Most of us know how to use digital technology, but not masters of the beast. You can create magnificent arts with digital technology, just like “analog technology”. To use psychologist Howard Gardner’s words, it takes 10 years to master something. Perhaps we have to wait 10 more years? By that time, there will be masters of digital technologies. Are you one of them?

Agree with bintar. For addition, in my opinion, the higher risk we are willing to take and the more complicated process to do in making a product, the more valuable the product will be.
While the digital painting provide undo-redo feature, some little mistakes in the canvas would not be that forgiving.

@petra, each media has its own technique, you could say that because you’re in digital world. I know some artist who capable do some good artwork on canvas but not in computer. I know some people who master (he is a photoshop trainer) in using the tools on photoshop but he doesn’t have any excelent art work. Master any digital art software is just not enough in order to produce a fine art work, its need a talent to do that.

Yes even you are master in using the tools. Lets say you’re master in using wordprocessing, but that is not guarante that you capable write a good article. So IMHO painting in the digital media is not easier than painting in the canvas media. Each media has its own technique.

I think the most important things if we talk about art is the process. Art comes from combination between the way we feel and think. That’s way sometimes we have different perspective about how to appreciate a form of art. In other words i want to say that art isn’t about how the way your express your feelin, but it’s a matter of how you think and feel the emotion itself.
